Fasting for forty days in Scripture is shown as a prolonged, focused period of withdrawal to seek God’s guidance or preparation. The three clear examples are Moses, Elijah, and Jesus.

Moses spent forty days and forty nights on Mount Sinai in the Lord’s presence, neither eating bread nor drinking water, as he received the commandments (Exodus 34:28). Elijah’s journey to Horeb also covers a forty-day, forty-night period of fasting as he sought sustenance and God’s direction (1 Kings 19:8). Jesus, before beginning his ministry, endured forty days and nights of fasting in the wilderness, followed by temptation (Matthew 4:2; Luke 4:2).

Daniel’s fasting is described as a three-week period of mourning and restraint, not forty days, and there isn’t a biblical record of Abraham or David fasting for forty days. So the trio that matches the forty-day fasts is Moses, Elijah, and Jesus.
